“I've never seen a psychiatric provider before”
A short answer
It's completely normal not to know what to expect, and you don't need to have the right words. Your first visit is a real conversation about what you're experiencing, your history and what you want from care. You don't need to be at a breaking point, or sure of a diagnosis, to come. At the end, we explain what we think is going on and talk through a plan together, at your pace.
What the first visit is like
Your first evaluation is up to 90 minutes in length. Some people need more time, some less, and we take the time you need. Follow-up visits are typically 20 to 30 minutes, and extended follow-ups are available.
Most visits are by secure video, anywhere in New Jersey. Our office is in Mount Laurel, NJ, and in-person visits there are limited and by appointment only; ask our office. You'll need to be physically in New Jersey for each visit, somewhere private where you can talk freely.
Your provider will ask about what brought you in, when it started, your sleep, mood, health, medications, family history and daily life. You can share as much or as little as you're ready to. Our clinicians are board-certified psychiatric nurse practitioners, focused on careful evaluation and medication.
Something to think about
What's on your mind about going?
Tap the one that's closest. Nothing is saved or sent.
If something is affecting your sleep, work, relationships or enjoyment of life, it's worth talking about. You don't have to wait until things fall apart.
You won't be. No prescription without a proper evaluation, and nothing changes without a conversation. Sometimes medication isn't the right fit, and we'll say so.
If you're hesitant about medicationMostly questions about your symptoms, history, health and goals. It's a conversation, not a test, and there are no wrong answers.
Questions you might be askedThat happens to lots of people. Jotting down a few notes ahead of time helps, and so does bringing a list (see below). Your provider will guide the conversation.
This isn't a diagnosis. Only an evaluation with a qualified provider can tell you what's going on.

Myth or fact? Your first visit
Choose an answer for each to see the explanation. Nothing is saved.
1You have to be at your lowest point before seeing a psychiatric provider.
Myth. Most people come because something has been hard for a while. Getting care earlier is a good thing.
2You'll leave your first visit with a prescription.
Myth. Not necessarily. Your provider explains what they think and the options. If medication could help, you decide together; sometimes it isn't needed.
3It helps to be specific about your symptoms.
Fact. When symptoms started, how strong they are and how often they happen all help your provider understand what's going on.
