“My medication stopped working, or never really worked”
A short answer
That's frustrating, and it deserves a careful look, not just another prescription. Sometimes a medication helps for a while and then symptoms come back; sometimes it never really helped. We review what you've taken, the doses and how long, what helped and what didn't, and whether the diagnosis still fits. Then we talk through the options.
What a careful review looks at
- Time and dose. Antidepressants usually take 4 to 8 weeks to work, so how long and at what dose matters.
- Everything else you take. Other medications, foods and supplements can make a medication more or less effective.
- Your health. Some medical conditions, such as thyroid problems, can cause symptoms that look like depression. Lab tests can help rule them out.
- Whether the diagnosis still fits. For example, people with bipolar II disorder may seek help only for depression, and the higher-energy periods can go unnoticed.
Until you've talked it through with a provider, keep taking your medication as prescribed. Please don't stop a medication on your own; some can cause withdrawal symptoms or a return of symptoms if stopped suddenly.

This happens. A medication can help for a while and then symptoms return. It's worth looking at the dose, what's changed in your life, and anything new you're taking.
How we adjust medicationWe'd look at whether it had enough time at a dose that could work, and whether a different approach fits better.
Read: What if medication doesn't work?Partly better is worth talking about. Options can include changing the dose or timing, switching to a different medication, or adding another kind of treatment.
Why finding the right medication can take timeWhen several medications haven't worked, it's time to step back and look at the whole picture.
If you've tried several medicationsThis isn't a diagnosis. Only an evaluation with a qualified provider can tell you what's going on.

Myth or fact? When medication isn't working
Choose an answer for each to see the explanation. Nothing is saved.
1If a medication stopped working, the diagnosis must have been wrong.
Myth. There are several possible reasons, from dose and timing to life changes or other medications. The diagnosis is one thing to check.
2Some medical conditions can cause symptoms that look like depression.
Fact. Certain medical conditions, such as thyroid disorders, can cause the same symptoms. A provider can rule these out with an exam, questions and lab tests.
3Other medications and supplements can change how well a medication works.
Fact. Interactions can make a medication more or less effective or cause side effects. That's why we ask about everything you take.
